Review and Giveaway – JML Direct Mylene Klass Nailwraps – Winner Announced

JML Direct is one of those companies that launch a number of diverse products – like the Ped Egg I reviewed recently.

They have since asked me to review their new Mylene Klass Nailwraps and I had to keep checking the name of the blog – no, they’re not necessarily a gadget and I won’t even attempt to pretend they are, but they do ‘make our life easier’  Whichever way I look at it, I thought why not – most of us want our nails to look great at all times and if these make it easier, then I’m ok with that.

But I’m not really a nail expert to be honest, so I thought I’d give them to my sister-in-law, who’s a manicurist by profession, to review and therefore absolutely qualified in knowing what she’s talking about when it comes to nails.

And here is the result and her opinion:

“The set is packaged really well and comes complete with a nail file which is a nice touch. The wraps are good quality and not thin – which is important. They’re extremely easy to apply with a smooth finish  and no crinkling on the end. All in all, they’re great for a night out if you want instantly nice nails”

There are 5 designer Mylene Klass Nailwraps sets to choose from and each design comes in 24 different shapes and sizes,

You can buy Mylene Klass Nailwraps in packs of 5 designs for £19.99 direct from JML by clicking here

JML have kindly offered to giveaway a couple of packs of nailwraps to one reader.

To enter, simply follow these instructions:

Gift Guide – Welcome to Family Hexbug

Cute little critters, aren't they

I was fortunate recently to win a Limited Edition Zombie Hexbug Nano – a glow-in-the-dark critter that lives in a coffin. Somewhere amongst all the gifts, gadgets and gizmos I’d forgotten about these great little bugs which provide hours of fun for us kids of all ages.

So I thought I’d add them to the Gift Guide and briefly introduce the current hexbug family

The tiny Hexbug Nano (rrp £8.99) maybe small by nature but is the mightiest of them all . Powered by a motor with 12 legs, the Nano uses vibrations to move and explore its environment, quickly finding its way round complex mazes, flipping itself to right itself and find its balance.  When meeting an object, the Nano quickly switches directions and scurries off with random persistance.

The latest addition to the Hexbug family is the amazing Spider (rrp £24.99).  The six-legged Spider features 360 degree steering, an LED eye and a 2-channel infrared remote control. The remote allows the user to operate  multiple bugs independently or at the same time. Its also the largest member of the family

The Hexbug Inchworm (rrp £18.99) also makes use of a 2-channel miniature infrared remote control unit.  The inchworm offers seven-way steering with a fascinating crawling motion

The Hexbug Crab (rrp £14.99) is another clever little critter. It uses light and sound sensors to hide in the dark and run from noise. You can control where it scurries and make it change direction by clapping – hours of fun!

The Hexbug Original (rrp £10.99) senses objects in its path and avoids them using its bump sensor feelers. Like the crab, you can control where it scurries and change direction by clapping.

Watch out for the high-speed Hexbug Ant (rrp £10.99) with its probing, tactile antennas and hooked claws. This little bug has front and rear touch sensors allowing it to manoeuvre around objects whilst its wheel-legs scurry around with crazy speed.

So if you’re looking for a fun new family, they’ll make a great gift running riot around the house. You can buy them directly from www.hexbug.com or a number of shops including Hamleys and Toys R Us.

Review D-link Wireless N Day and Night Camera

There are a lot of Baby monitors out there, with all the popular baby brand names offering their own solution.  There are also a fair amount of home monitoring devices available, albeit complicated to set up and not too user-friendly.

D-Link, the maker of all things internet routing-related have decided to step into a fairly crowded market with a new take on the home and child-monitoring format. The big differentiator here is their unique portal, MyD-Link, that enables the user to view the video online, via the web or a mobile phone on the iphone/ipad or android platform (at this point in time)

The DCS-932L  D-Link Wireless N Day and Night Camera offers home and child monitoring with build-in infrared ability to allow night-time viewing – something thats obviously a necessity with a baby. The camera has an internal web server, which means its always ‘on’, even without a computer and connects wirelessly to your network.

Its small and easy to move around from room to room, but it does need to be plugged in at all times, which means loose cables if you plan to take it with you. There is also a microphone so you can listen as well as watch.

Setup is amazingly simple. D-Link supply a CD which takes you step-by-step through the setup process. You can use a WPS button to connect wirelessly immediately if your modem has that facility, else you need to connect initially via a supplied ethernet.

I must admit, for me, these 2 processes are my nightmare! I don’t have an internal CD Drive on  my laptop so have to rummage around finding my external drive and  my router is not in the same room –  so I have to carry everything into the room with the router to install anything relating to the internet hardware. This isn’t a negative at all for D-Link – just me grumbling at my own setup!

I honestly thought I would have a problem installing the camera, but it genuinely took about 2 minutes and the ‘green’ light showed as soon as I connected. The camera then re-booted itself auomatically to enable to wireless connection.

The installation proceeds to take you straight to the MyDLink portal and you register a profile just using an email username and password. Activate the account and thats it.

At this point, the doorbell rang – my husband had returned with the Little Monster and I went to answer the door. And the whistling started. And it was loud! Really Loud. I had no idea where it was coming from but it was screeching and painful. Following the sound took me back to the camera. I looked at the screen and then looked at the volume. It was up at its highest and the feedback was horrendous. OK, I’m an idiot – two things learnt immediately – turn down my volume (!) and move your laptop away from the camera – it picks up the feedback and its not a pleasant sound.

The unkempt lesser-spotted Little Monster caught on camera

The camera picture is pretty good. I didn’t have very good light so it switches to infrared and shows a black and white picture. It does depend on your connection as to how well it streams, but overall, the picture is good and comparable to other baby/house monitors available.

In summary, the D-Link day and night camera offers an 24-hour online solution to monitoring your house or kids using any platform.

Right now, I’d be wary to say it could take the place of a fixed, standalone baby monitor for a variety of reasons – including the fact that it does depend on an internet connection and viewing is via a browser (which obviously means you have to have your PC/laptop/phone open at all times to watch it).

However, I think its a fantastic secondary monitor, or as an option for slightly older kids. If they want to go outside whilst you need to do something, you can easily set it up to watch them – or if they’re playing upstairs you can keep an eye on them. Another great way to use it is if you are using babysitters when you go out. Put it in the room and you can check in online on your phone whilst you’re out – it might stop you from calling the babysitters every 5 minutes to check on the kids 😉

The D-Link monitor is also a great option if you’re travelling and want to keep an eye on the house or office – just hook it up and off you go – as long as you have an internet connection you can watch the video and that ultimately is the beauty of it.

So whilst there maybe some initial flaws to being your sole baby monitor, I think in the long run, this is the future. Maybe if D-Link could somehow include a single standalone monitor for home-use, that could be a quick-fix solution but they’ve got the difficult bit right – its simply and straightforward to set up – especially for people that find internet technology daunting, and you can view it online over the internet on any platform

The DCS-932L D-Link Wireless N Day and Night Camera is available for £99.99 at the usual online and high street stores

Review of the Neato XV-15 Robot Vacuum Cleaner

I’ve been fascinated by ‘robot vacuum’ cleaners for a long time now – years in fact, as I remember when they were launched back in the US and, no surprises, I’ve always wanted to have one. So I was really quite excited when I was asked to review one of them by Neato.

Neato is a US company based in Silicon Valley and the Neato XV-15™ is their first foray into the UK. It uses a unique laser-mapping technology which incorporates a full 360-degree view of a room, allowing it to see its surroundings.  It then maps the most efficient cleaning path by analysing the environment, including walls, doorways, obstacles up to 4 meters away. Wish I could do that – but my clumsiness allows me to trip every couple of feet. Once its happy with its designated area, the clever little robot covers the perimeter first and the cleans inside – a bit like how I do a jigsaw I guess!

If, like me, you’ve never used a robot cleaner, whilst I’m a bit too excited by it, you might be a bit suspect in its actual cleaning ability.  So how does it fare? Can a robot really take the place of us mere mortals?

The initial setting up was surprisingly easy. There wasn’t hundreds of different pieces you had to put together, or cables everywhere. Simply take it out the box, find a wall to place the ‘base unit’ and thats basically all there is to it. The base unit acts as the charger and this becomes the robot’s home for its duration, so make it a comfy one – no walls too close, otherwise it gets claustrophobic and won’t function properly.

If at this point you’re reading this and feeling a bit worried about my sanity, fear not! Its just that this little robot is a bit like a pet – we called ours Nero the Neato 😉

Make Neato's home as comfortable and spacey as possible

The great thing about this robot vacuum is that you can schedule it to clean – not just a daily basis, but any day and any time you prefer – even whilst your out.

It simply disconnects itself from the charging unit and off it runs through your house or flat.

The first time we used it was a bit weird for all of us as the Neato found its bearing around our tip of a house. It took its time, looking in all the nooks and crannies and then just went for it. And I mean – went for it. The little robot took itself throughout the downstairs of our house, under the tables and chairs, around the junk on the floor, cleaning as it went.

It is, like most vacuums, quite loud though, so try to schedule it at a time of day where you don’t actually want to watch the telly.  In fact, I forgot it was even cleaning at one point and almost jumped out of my skin when it decided to venture into the kitchen, where I was cooking. But we didn’t bother each other and I let it carry on with the housework.

At one point, the Neato went quiet – and we actually lost the poor thing. It was quite disturbing to be honest and we had to go on a bit of a search. When we did find it, it was a bit poorly – it had a tissue stuck in it and couldn’t continue. So we removed it and it continued on. This is probably one of the setbacks – it needs an alarm or something to notify the user if there’s something wrong – if its under a table, it can actually be hard to find.

Anyway, at the end of its chore, the Neato happily finds its way back to its charging unit for the next day’s clean. Its pretty intelligent – I must admit, I’ve never seen my husband so excited and enthusiastic about vacuuming the house – this is probably as close to cleaning as he’ll ever be and he couldn’t wait for the next day’s clean.

And how was the house? Well, for once, our house was rather clean and tidy. You do have to pick up any small bits before it goes on its rounds, as it can choke a bit, but otherwise, the dust box really filled up after a single clean.

I can’t compare it to other robot vacuums, since this is the first one  I’ve used, but I can compare to normal humanoid vacuums and I must admit, this is all rather impressive. It may miss a few bits and pieces, but then, so do I with a Henry, but otherwise it does a great job and is all rather fun, although pretty expensive.

Here’s some of the functional and technical specs for those that are interested:

  • Scuff-free navigation: The robot’s laser-mapping technology constantly updates its internal map so it can accurately detect objects greater than four inches in height
  • Low-profile access: The robotic vacuum cleaner’s low profile (less than four inches high) allows it to clean under beds, sofas, and kick boards in the kitchen.
  • Smart design and large dirt bin: The Neato XV-15’s D-shape is equipped with a forward-positioned wide brush allows it to better clean the corners and edges of a room. This design allows for a larger dirt bin (660cc or .65 litres)
  • Self-docking to re-power: After completing its cleaning, the robot returns automatically to its base to re-charge itself. By utilising the charging base, the Neato XV-15 is charged and ready to go when it’s needed most.
  • Cleaning scheduler –  schedule the robot to clean every day, keeping homes spic and span.

The  Neato XV-15 is an excellent robot vacuum although its price is quite steep at £399 rrp. However, if you have no time to vacuum, have health issues, pets or many other reasons, it can save a lot of money in cleaners, time and backpain and I would recommend looking into buying one. Compared with a Dyson that costs between £250 and £350 and is extremely heavy to boot its actually not bad at all –  a lot lighter, cleverer and prettier as well

Neato loaned me the XV-15 for the purpose of this review.  You can order it from retailers such as www.amazon.co.uk
