Angry Birds – Best Game Ever Or Just a Passing Addiction?

Angry Birds. Sigh.

Sometimes there comes along a game that is so simple, yet so annoyingly addictive that it can just take over your life. Over the years there’s been Snake, Minesweeper, Freecell, Bejewelled, among many many others. And now Angry Birds.

Those birds are angry (image taken from the rovio.com website)

Angry Birds was released in 2009 by a small Finnish games company called Rovio. Its just a puzzle game. Thats it. Its just a game that makes you catapult birds at the correct angle to destroy an army of piggies. Thats it. There really was nothing new about it – there’s been hundreds, if not thousands of puzzle games released. There’s been plenty of ‘catapult’ type games that rely on angle, distance and speed. Thats it.

So what is it about these angry little birds that seem to have made a dent into the mindset of way too many people, on every mobile platform available? It might just be its simplicity of the actual game play – yet you need force, brains, logic and skill. However, I just think it was released at the right time, on the right platform (touchscreen mobile phones) and at the right price. It seems to have struck a chord just as people were getting used to using touchscreens

If you don’t play Angry Birds yet, you may know someone who does. If you’re not addicted yet, you may know someone who is and it can truly take over your life. Its not just finishing every single level, its getting three stars for each game; its buying each additional seasonal pack; its finishing each section as quickly as possible; its spending hours and hours of your day conquering each and every aspect of the game. Its recognising each bird, each sound, every nuance of every character be they a bird or pig. Does this sound like an addiction yet?

I think whats most surprising is that the game is only 2 years old. Yet it’s already entering mythic proportions within popular culture, with branding and merchandising appearing everywhere. Its probably the first ‘star’ from the mobile smartphone boom.

Have those Angry Birds taken over your life yet?

The first thing DS1 (aged 7) asked when I got my iPhone was whether I’d downloaded Angry Birds yet – no idea where he had heard of it before… it’s his app of choice now!

    • gadgetmum says:

absolutely! Even my 2 yr old loves playing it. She has no idea what to do, and usually sends the bird the wrong way, but she doesn’t care – just loves the idea of it

  2. Jo Young says:

I was completely addicted to Angry Birds for a few weeks (I used to pinch my girls iPod Touches to play) and once I’d completed all the levels tried to complete them all with 3 stars. But I’ve lost the buzz now……. until the next version comes out ๐Ÿ™‚

    • gadgetmum says:

oh you’ll get back to it ๐Ÿ˜‰ My husband is like that, will complete all the levels and then calm down – until the next seasonal pack is released!
